 “The Lion King”

SENSES Lifestyle Magazine along with Gentlemen Republic hosted a landmark musical event at the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center; The Lion King. Under the direction of CBG Arts Director Brandon Rainey, musical artistry of Pooh Mayo, and choreography Davieonne Williams attendees both young and old were swept away on a nostalgic journey carried from the classic Disney film and Award-winning Broadway play. Young actors, actresses, singers, and dancers from the Los Angeles area graced the stage capturing the inner-child of every audience member through their portrayal of the all too familiar characters of young Simba, the mighty Mufasa, the bright and protective Zazu, the nefarious Scar, Timon & Pumbaa, and many others.

The story of the Lion King follows the upbringing of  Simba as he begins life as an honored prince and the son of the powerful King Mufasa. The cub’s happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle, Scar, murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom. Simba in his exile befriends the animated and carefree duo Timon & Pumbaa only to be visited by the spirit of his father who instructs him to defeat Scar and assume his rightful place as king. Some of these individuals had never performed prior to this theatrical showcase, but gave the crowd a spectacular performance that kept patrons laughing and entertained as if they had been doing it for years. “The new students have truly showed their confidence on stage, and they’ve found their comfort zone” said the director of CBG Arts. The vast amount of talented young men and women who are under the artistic nurturing and guidance of Brandon Rainey truly exhibited in their artistry just how dedicated, supporting, and committed they are to redefining and setting a new precedent for musical theater in the inner-city communities of Los Angeles. It was truly a heart-warming experience that brought every audience member back to their childhood and showed the immense power and promise within our youth today.
